Shared Motherhood

Shared motherhood fosters a unique biological connection between both partners, enabling them to actively participate in the conception and gestation of their child. This approach provides same-sex female couples with a collaborative
and shared experiences in building their family.

In this process, one partner undergoes ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval, and the retrieved eggs are fertilised with donor sperm. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the other partner’s uterus, allowing her to carry the pregnancy.

Who Is Suitable For Shared Motherhood?

Shared motherhood is an option for same-sex female couples who both wish to play a biological role in the conception of their child.

What Does Shared Motherhood Involve?

Step 1 - Consultation and Assessment

The process begins with a consultation with a fertility specialist. Both partners undergo a thorough assessment of their reproductive health, including ovarian reserve and general health.

The couple decides which partner will provide the eggs and undergo ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval, and which partner will carry the pregnancy.

The partner designated as the egg provider undergoes ovarian stimulation using fertility medications to encourage the development of multiple eggs.

Once the eggs are deemed mature, a minor surgical procedure called egg retrieval is performed to collect the eggs from the ovaries. This procedure is typically done under sedation.

The retrieved eggs are fertilized with donor sperm in the laboratory. The sperm can be from a known or anonymous donor, depending on the couple’s preference.

The resulting embryos are cultured in the laboratory for a few days to allow their development.

The selected embryos are transferred into the uterus of the partner designated as the carrier. This is typically a straightforward procedure, resembling a Pap smear, and is performed in a clinic or fertility center.

The partner who is carrying the pregnancy undergoes routine monitoring, including ultrasound scans and hormonal assessments, to track the progress of the pregnancy.

If successful, the partner who carries the pregnancy will continue the pregnancy to term and give birth to the child.
