Frozen Embryo Transfer

Frozen embryo transfer (FET) serves as a versatile and effective option in assisted reproductive technologies, offering individuals and couples increased control over the timing and conditions of their embryo transfer, ultimately enhancing the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Who Is Suitable For Frozen Embryo Transfer?

FET is a suitable option for individuals or couples who have undergone IVF and have surplus embryos from a previous cycle. It is also chosen by those who have preserved embryos through egg freezing or have undergone preimplantation genetic testing. FET offers optimal timing for embryo transfer, allowing precision in synchronization with the woman’s menstrual cycle or specific treatments.

Medical reasons, such as previous complications during IVF, uterine conditions, or recurrent pregnancy loss, may also prompt the use of FET. Additionally, FET is a preferred choice for couples using donor sperm or those aiming for family expansion after a successful IVF cycle.

The decision is made through collaborative discussions with our dedicated fertility specialists, taking into account your unique circumstances and treatment objectives. We invite you to reach out to our clinic for personalised guidance and support on your fertility journey.

What Does Frozen Embryo Transfer Involve?

FET is a procedure used in assisted reproductive technology to implant previously frozen embryos into the uterus. Here is an overview of the key steps involved in a frozen embryo transfer:

Step 1 - Thawing of Embryos

The process begins with the thawing of frozen embryos. These embryos were previously created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and then cryopreserved for future use.

After thawing, the embryologist assesses the viability of the embryos. Not all embryos survive the freezing and thawing process, so a careful evaluation is performed to select the healthiest and most viable embryos.

The woman’s uterus is prepared for embryo transfer through hormonal medications. This may involve estrogen to stimulate the growth of the uterine lining and progesterone to support its development, creating an optimal environment for embryo implantation.

The timing of the embryo transfer is carefully synchronized with the woman’s menstrual cycle or hormonal preparation to ensure the receptive state of the uterine lining.

Once the uterine lining is deemed suitable, the selected thawed embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus. This is a relatively straightforward and minimally invasive procedure, often resembling a Pap smear, and is typically done in a clinic or fertility center.

After the embryo transfer, the woman may be advised to rest for a short period before resuming normal activities. Progesterone supplementation may continue to support the early stages of pregnancy.

Approximately 10-14 days after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is conducted to determine whether implantation has occurred.
