Intrauterine Insemination

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility procedure in which highly concentrated and specially prepared sperm is introduced directly into a woman’s uterus during her peak fertility window. The objective is to optimize the likelihood of sperm reaching and fertilizing the egg.

Who Is Suitable For IUI?

IUI offers a logical next step for individuals and couples whose infertility persists despite conventional first-line treatments.

What's the Difference Between IVF & IUI?

The key contrast lies in the site of fertilization. In vitro fertilization (IVF) involves
fertilization outside the body, typically in a laboratory dish, whereas intrauterine
insemination (IUI) facilitates fertilization within the woman’s reproductive system.
The decision between IVF and IUI is often dictated by the precise fertility diagnosis, with
the recommended treatment personalized to the unique circumstances of the individual
or couple.

What Does IUI Involve?

It’s important to note that the specific steps and protocols may vary based on individual circumstances and the recommendations of the fertility specialist.

Step 1 - Ovarian Monitoring

The process typically begins with monitoring the woman’s menstrual cycle. Ovulation is tracked through methods such as ultrasound scans to observe follicle development and blood tests to measure hormone levels.

In some cases, fertility medications may be prescribed to stimulate the ovaries and increase the chances of multiple egg development.

The male partner or a sperm donor provides a semen sample. The sperm is then processed in the laboratory to isolate motile and healthy sperm.

The processed sperm is introduced directly into the uterus through a thin catheter. This is a relatively simple and painless procedure, resembling a Pap smear, and is performed in a doctor’s office.

Following the insemination, the woman may rest for a short period before resuming normal activities. There is no need for hospitalization, and most women can resume their daily routines immediately.

Approximately 10-14 days after embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is conducted to determine the success of the procedure. Regardless of the outcome, First IVF remains steadfast in providing emotional support, guidance, and further consultations to address any concerns or plan for the next steps.
